#1

A memoir about the evolution of the relationship between a mother and her son as they confront the reality of his bipolar disorder and alcohol addiction while simultaneously accepting their limitations and embracing the power to change.

My son with the chocolate brown eyes did not come with a book of instructions. A nice Jewish girl, I assumed that the same kind of nurturance and financial support my parents provided me would guarantee his success. My path with my son diverged from all that was familiar.

A natural outgrowth of this literary and life changing journey has been the informal counseling and support of other families who are facing similar challenges. I felt very alone as I navigated this unfamiliar terrain, and my service and gratitude are expressed in the connections I continue to make with others.

#2

I was challenged to individuate from my mother when a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia invited me to step out of her shadows and discover my true identity. This memoir weaves together my mother's illness, her family history and my journey towards self-awareness.

It is the story of the deep, but complex bond between a mother and her daughter, and how we ultimately move forward after profound loss.
